MEANSTREAK IS THE MOST LEGENDARY CLEVELAND BAND THAT NEVER EXISTED

Meanstreak is a “band” surrounded by incredible myth. People refer to them in the same breath as Integrity, Confront, and the legendary Clevo bands who have influenced generations of followers. The thing is, they never played a show. on top of that, these brutes only have one song, “Final Word”, which appears on the Only The Strong Victory Records 7 inch compilation.

This is a band that simply never was! Do not argue semantics. You know exactly what I mean! Mean Streak is pretty much an anomaly. Let’s take a look at the members of this band. We have Mean Steve Murad, fresh out of Confront, on vocals. The bass is handled by Tom Brose of Confront and Integrity. Some guy who disappeared named Nate was on drums. And last but definitely not least is the oddball of the bunch, Paul Schalacter. This guy comes from a whole different breed of hardcore bands and is a founding member of Cider, Darvocets, Inmates, and Brainwashed Youth. What an incredibly weird and awesome lineup. Some members of this collaborative song would go on to feud and (physically) fight, or never see each other again. Something this strange could never happen again.

It’s nice to fantasize about what a full length record by these rowdy fellas would have sounded like. I guess it would have probably been a cross between One Life Crew, Confront, Integrity, and Cider. The shows would certainly be outrageous and the legend would definitely spread far and wide.

Don Austin has always been one of my favorite hardcore bands from Northeast Ohio. They are from Akron and play criminally underrated fast hardcore. I miss their live shows to this day. Rust Belt Hammer is even named after Don Austin. They had an ep called Rust Belt Blues and a song named “I Fix Everything With a Hammer”. I combined the names and that is how this blog was born.

INTEGRITY DID A SECRET SHOW IN CLEVELAND

Integrity means many things to many people. Members of the band have attracted equal amounts of love and hate over the years. They have been a controversial unit who have set the bar pretty damn high. Both aesthetically and musically, Integrity has swayed a whole generation of hardcore fans and musicians away from the posi oriented jargon of bands like Youth of Today, and off into an abysmal, dark, and metallic place of despair. I can definitely get down with that. Last night (9/282015) Integrity made a surprise appearance at the Foundry in Cleveland, Ohio. Only about forty lucky fans and friends were there to witness the madness, from what I am told. Here is a video from the show of them doing the classic “Micha”, courtesy of Bill Zakovec.

Set list:
Vocal Test
Hollow
Systems Overload
Judgement Day
Micha
Hybrid Moments (Misfits cover)

He will be speaking about his music in a small, intimate setting. Vermapyre (Dwid’s solo project) will also be playing and if you attend this event, you will be lucky enough to catch a special screening of a movie that has yet to be announced. THE BEST OF INTEGRITY

Love ’em or hate ’em, Dwid and company are Cleveland hardcore legends. The demo tracks and some of their earliest work sounds like Cro Mags in a brawl with GISM. The later stuff is more polished but equally punishing and they have never really quit with the assault. Here is some of my favorite Integrity music.
