Cider may dawn the faux British accents but make no mistake about it, they are very Cleveland. The first time I saw Cider was in Youngstown, Ohio, at Play Fast or Die Fest. Their set was way longer than the allotted slot, nobody was into it, and then they got into a confrontation with members of Crowd Deterrent. I still have no clue exactly what went on between those two groups but it all seemed pretty funny and obnoxious.
Cider has been playing on and off since the 90s and shares members with other bands such as Darvocets, Integrity, Midnight, and more. They are Cleveland (British) Royalty. I haven’t really posted much about Cider, but here’s to them. The music is violent and angry, fitting into the Clevo HC lineage perfectly. Some may call them a “joke band” but they are way more pissed off than a lot of “serious” bands.
Where Integrity sounds sinister, In Cold Blood sounds bleak. This album reminds me of driving through the rain and sludge of Northeast Ohio on a really shitty day, feeling bummed out and hating life. I love it! We got the singer of Mushroomhead on vocals here but this is no nu-metal album. Hell On Earth is a certified hardcore sleeper hit with severe metallic overtones. Heavy, sluggish (in a good way), and harder than the rusty nails in a decaying Rust Belt infrastructure. Do yourself a favor and revisit this album. The solos from A2 (Integrity, Inmates) sound just like you would expect. The riffs from Blaze Tishko (One Life Crew) carry this sucker to the next level. It’s really a great piece of Cleveland Hardcore history.
I previously premiered some tracks by Dead Shall Rise but here is the cherry on top of your fuckin’ sundae. I hear some awesome influences in here; stoner metal, Neurosis, and At The Gates! Incase you forgot, the lineup is Aaron and Lenny Melnick, Rob Orr, and Blaze Tishko.
Ruiners are one of the most self destructive and sloppy yet astoundingly powerful bands to come out of Cleveland Hardcore. They feature Chris Erba of H-100s infamy on vocals and come to fuck everything up in sight. Go to http://www.nowthatsclass.net/ for more details on the fest and don’t miss these blood thirsty goons.
Plague are probably forgotten to most but during the 80s they were one of Cleveland’s most important hardcore bands. In addition to playing all over Northeast Ohio, they also brought their brand of hardcore to Europe. This is some rare footage that has recently surfaced on YouTube. Take a look into the time capsule. You won’t be disappointed.
You can’t change people’s minds about certain things; religion, politics, and what “is and isn’t punk” are subjects that come to mind. I’ll tell you what though, save your political correctness, spikey jacket with perfectly placed patches, and self righeous attitudes…Inmates are one of the punkest bands I have ever heard. There are no gimmicks needed in Ohio. Just bring your sense of humor and self-destructive attitude or fuck off. If you’ve never been to Now That’s Class, just take a listen to what you are missing.
