This is a podcast that we host and present over here at Rust Belt Hammer. On this episode we talk about psychedelic growth, conflict, funny/painful sexual experiences + more. We take a look at metaphysical things with a comedic, modern slant.
I met Paulie Think around 2005 or 2006 due to the website BYOFL (Book Your Own Fucking Life). It was a network for bands, promoters, and other’s trying to link together in the punk rock community. We were two of of the only rappers on the website. He came to Kent, Ohio, and played a show at my house that was quickly shut down by the fuzz. We moved the performance to a short lived venue called the ECC, which was ran by this cokehead guy named Joel with a bad temper. Things went well and I didn’t hear from Paulie for another year or two but then we ended up randomly touring together a few years later along with PT Burnem. I didn’t think Paulie liked me. He was sober, doing yoga every morning, and I was constantly drunk and depressed! It was the middle of the winter and we were on tour for over a month with a small break in the middle. We slept in freezing houses, played weird vegan pizza parlors, and hustled night after night, slinging cds to minimal crowds. I can’t say that it was a comfortable tour but we definitely paid some hard DIY dues and formed a tight bond. It’s been a long and sometimes turbulent friendship but Paulie is someone that I hold in high regards for his history, what he has been through, and who he has become.
Over the years I would hear tidbits of stories about how he toured with MDC, played with Fugazi, turned Disassociate on to drum and bass music, etc. He is probably the only rapper ever to receive a beat from a member of Neurosis as well. I always thought that was the coolest thing ever. It’s great to finally be able to document this stuff. We cover his history, punk rock roots, etc.
One thing I totally forgot to include is the story about how he threw a pie in the face of Ben Weasel from Screeching Weasel. Maybe another time! You can’t beat that though, right? Pretty god damn funny. Enjoy this interview and spread it around like the flu this season. Merry Holidays, ya jabronis!

Meganoke is an up and coming singer whose reach extends to the hip hop world and beyond. In just a few years she has left a bigger footprint in the underground music scene than many do in their whole careers. She has hit the road with Abstract Rude, 2mex, and other indie rap legends but would also fit the bill sharing the stage with someone like Feist or Sleigh Bells. This was an interesting conversation about her evolution as a musical artist. Give it a listen and check out all of our Rust Belt Hammer podcasts.

Check out what I think is some of the best stuff to come out of Akron, Cleveland, Kent, etc. This is not a definitive collection. Just some awesome tunes. Some are classic and some are forgotten. “Agitated” by Electric Eels is hands down one of the most important punk rock songs of all time. I put it in my top ten, maybe even top five. Nobody else was making those brash, snotty, abrasive sounds. Another Rust Belt city, Detroit, had The Stooges and MC5 but the Eels were something different. They were distinctly Cleveland. John and Dave E created something that is one of a kind. Later John did X_X. This is his story. Continue reading A TALK WITH PROTOPUNKER JOHN MORTON (ELECTRIC EELS, X_X)
Here is part 2 of our very special podcast with Matt Cross. Part 1 was focused on his history with punk, hardcore, and straight edge. This one is all about his wrestling career. We talk about MTV’s short lived Wrestle Society X, Lucha Underground, Backyard Wrestling, and a very emotional story about wrestling for the prison system.
Rust Belt Hammer is hosted by Matt Greenfield. This episode is co-hosted by comedian, former Howard Stern writer, and Pitboss 200 frontman John Tole.
