BOBBY WOMACK: CLEVELAND SOUL LEGEND

Bobby Womack is an underrated icon from Cleveland, Ohio. He was the young protégé of Sam Cooke, remaining close friends ’til Cooke’s untimely death in 1964. Afterwards, Womack went on to play in the mid to late 1960s with such illustrious acts as Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. He’s been covered by the Rolling Stones, and partied for years with Sly Stone. Bobby was shot in the head by his ex wife Barbara, and spent many years struggling as a drug addict. Maybe it’s the Cleveland Curse that has stunted the level of fame he deserves, but I feel that Bobby Womack’s name belongs in the same sentence as Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, or any Motown great. Here are some highlights from his career to sit down and listen to.
