DARK BLUE IS THE NATURAL EXTENSION OF PUERTO RICO FLOWERS

In 2010 John Sharkey’s Clockcleaner left the world with their triumphantly dark ep, Auf Wiedersehen, foreshadowing what was to come with his next group, Puerto Rico Flowers. It’s now 2014 and Puerto Rico Flowers are just a mere memory. Sharkey is back though and doesn’t disappoint with his new group, Dark Blue. Take a listen below to his new songs and also some past tunes.

HORRIBLE FEST 2014 REVIEW AND PICTURES

Horrible Fest 2014 came and went in a furious blur. Drugs were consumed, fireworks were set off, sweaty dudes moshed, and bands raged with possessed punk rock passion. Iceage headlined the first night with a disappointing and monotonous set. It’s okay to have an off night, fellas. I ain’t mad at ya! The locals more than made up for it. Fat Vegan did an old school Cleveland style set where it’s miraculous that nobody lost an eye while Cruelster and Queens of Hell shredded Now That’s Class to pieces.

Night two was equally stellar with locals Hep*Z, Wetbrain, and Obnox absolutely dismantling the crushed competition. Cleveland was in full effect, hot damn! It’s a real shame I left before the Secret Prostitutes from Houston. They are a fun and unique KBD styled band. Pleasure Leftists took Homostupids slot which was perfectly fine with me. Singer Hailey does ghostly goth vocals reminiscent of a witchy Grace Slick that carry the bands dreary, proficiently played post-punk sound into an English field of dreams and despair. Unholy Two also murdered my ear drums with droning, hateful, noise-punk. Go get their new album on Austin’s 12xu! Continue reading HORRIBLE FEST 2014 REVIEW AND PICTURES

I WENT TO CLEVELAND AND ALL I GOT WAS HEPATITIS Z

I bet you wonder what a band combining members of Boulder, Kill The Hippies, and Sockeye sounds like., don’t ya? What if I told you they were dressed up as 70s sleaze rockers of the satanic ilk, with music that fits the look like a brand new boot. I mean, shit, these guys even cover KISS. Mix in some Pentagram, hepatitis, Dio, 77 punk, and coke bumps off a small yet chubby penis, and walla! Hep*Z is the newest burning sensation, sweeping kids off their feet with the sweet, sweet rock.

LISTEN TO SOME TRACKS FROM CLEVELAND’S SAUCEPAN RECORDS

What do you get when you combine a slew of members from such esteemed acts as Lucha Eterna, Bad Noids, Inmates, Cider, Avon Ladies, etc? Saucepan Records! This label is representing the new breed of Cleveland fuckin’ hardcore. Weird, energetic, and always destructive. The 7 inch records will start rolling in soon but hold your horses, Fat Vegan and Real Regular will be playing Horrible Fest and satisfying your every need. RACE, CLASS, AND ADDICTION IN SPORTS. ESPN 30 FOR 30’S “YOUNGSTOWN BOYS” DOCUMENTARY (TRESSEL AND CLARETT)

The story of Maurice Clarett is a fascinating one. ESPN’s award winning “30 For 30” documentary series did a great job of capturing the triumph and downfall of this kid from Warren, Ohio. I found a bootleg copy for free on YouTube and definitely wanted to share it with you faithful Rust Belt Hammer viewers.

MURDEREDMAN ARE CLEVELAND’S PREMIER NOISE ROCK BAND

Feedback and distortion galore, Murderedman are doing music in the style of early 90s Am Rep bands but with a Midwestern originality. Don’t just take my word for it, have a listen.

TODAY IS THE 44TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE KENT STATE MASSACRE

Peace is a chirp in the far distance but war is on your television screen. History repeats itself. Things aren’t so different from yesteryear. Please learn from the past and maybe one day events like this will stop happening, not just in America, but all across the globe. HIGH IN THE MID SIXTIES: GARAGE ROCK FROM OHIO (TRACKS FROM PART 2)

Pebbles unearthed these rare tracks in 1985 and released them on vinyl. They range from British Invasion worship to seriously ugly and mean protopunk. Make sure these songs are never forgotten! Spread the word, freaks. Ohio music is here to stay. Continue reading HIGH IN THE MID SIXTIES: GARAGE ROCK FROM OHIO (TRACKS FROM PART 2)

THE BEST OF INTEGRITY

Love ’em or hate ’em, Dwid and company are Cleveland hardcore legends. The demo tracks and some of their earliest work sounds like Cro Mags in a brawl with GISM. The later stuff is more polished but equally punishing and they have never really quit with the assault. Here is some of my favorite Integrity music.
