A MONOLITH OF METAL: EMISSIONS FEST; A PINNACLE IN YOUNGSTOWN MUSIC HISTORY.

By SARAH SEPANEK

Recent years have been good for stoner metal. Appreciation and opportunities have been coming for stoner metal bands of all genres – doom, sludge, jam, drone. Seeing Mastodon playing for thousands at festivals, or reading great reviews Pelican’s new album on mainstream websites is refreshing for fans and rewarding for bands, most of whom are longtime road dogs. As always, it comes with a bit of conflict: your favorite band gets some success, but seeing them on Pitchfork being lapped up by scene kids is akin to watching someone who can’t drive stick manhandle your vintage Camaro. INMATES FULL SET FROM NEW YORK’S ALRIGHT

Inmates should have a new record out soon and this set proves that Paul and company are playing tightly as ever. I don’t think some of these New Yorkers knew what hit them when these Cleveland madmen blazed through a set that clocks in at just under twenty minutes. Found this footage on YouTube today and figured that sharing is caring.

WILD WINGS ARE YOUNGSTOWN’S BEST NEW BAND

Wild Wings are an anomaly as of right now. No other band in the netherworld of Youngstown has captured a soundscape like this, possibly ever. The music of Wild Wings is like as if Jay Reatard was in an Ohio birthed Hawkwind. This is good stuff. I could go on and on but the music speaks for it’s self so here it is.

MC BRAINS IS AN OBSCURE RAPPER FROM CLEVELAND. I THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD BUT HE’S NOT. HERE’S SOME OF HIS JAMS

brains

MC Brains cracked the hip hop radar in the early 90s with his best song, “Oochie Coochie”, and then had a steady decline from mainstream success and recognition. He was even down with Bel Biv Devoe. I randomly saw him perform a song at a hip hop show in 2003. Could have sworn he died soon after but apparently he is still rapping, just under a new identity. Here are some throwback jams from Cleveland’s own MC Brains. Continue reading MC BRAINS IS AN OBSCURE RAPPER FROM CLEVELAND. I THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD BUT HE’S NOT. HERE’S SOME OF HIS JAMS

I INTERVIEWED TOXIC AVENGER’S VERY OWN MELVIN THE MOP BOY AKA MARK TORGL

I first (started to watch) “The Toxic Avenger” at the wise old age of eight. I put it in my state-of-the-art VCR and pressed play. Like most children eight years of age, I was under parental supervision. My dad and I watched as Skippy’s young and innocent head explodes. We saw Slug straddle a nude Wanda as she pulls a knife out on the socially awkward and nerdy Melvin. Brains were exposed and my dad had enough. Melvin had sprouted into Toxie, the bigger and strong monster hero. Three years later I convinced my mom to rent me the movie all over again and this time I watched it alone, taking the whole flick in. Things have never been the same. “The Toxic Avenger” stands as one of the best movies in my life. It was an honor to speak with the Mop Boy himself Ladies and gentlemen, all grown up, here’s Mr. Mark Torgl.

CHAOS IN TEJAS IS PRESENTING SOME SHOWS AND IT SURE LOOKS LIKE A FEST TO ME!

It was announced recently that Chaos In Tejas would be no more but have no fear. Coming in late May will be some fun-filled lineups presented by Timmy Hefner and Chaos In Tejas. I could do without a few of the younger generic Austin hardcore bands like Breakout but the overall lineup more than makes up for it with some quite stellar acts such as Floor, Destruction Unit, and Vaaska.

HORSES HAVE PEOPLE TEETH

Horses Have People Teeth are a band that should be a household name amongst metal fans but like many bands of this region, they will rest in obscurity and the memories of those lucky enough to thrash out to their live performances. They were three dudes from Sharon, Pennsylvania and Youngstown, Ohio. Joe played in the notable metal band From A Second Story Window and Dave went on to Pittsburgh favorites such as Drug Lust and Radium Girls. Nick is currently jamming with Stoner Christ out of Pittsburgh. I will forever remember them fondly as a beer in the basement sort of headbanging band. RIP Horses Have people Teeth. Here is a tribute to you. Cheers.

JERRY “THE KING” LAWLER LOVES THE CLEVELAND INDIANS

Little known fact; Jerry Lawler’s family moved from Memphis to Cleveland during his formative high school years. It was there that he developed a love for the Browns and Indians. Check out this clip below of Jerry representing for the Tribe on an old and shoddy episode of Memphis Wrestling.

You know The Cramps are from Ohio right? Here They Are on 120 Minutes and More.

It’s almost indisputable that The Cramps are one of the greatest and most influential American punk bands. They have been around in 1976 and enjoyed decades of success. Here are some cool videos of them that I think you readers will most definitely find entertaining.
