Akron, Ohio has a solid tradition of experimental, independently thinking, and punk influenced music. Party of Helicopters at one time were one of the more known bands of the area. They gladly carried the torch for post-hardcore until’ their breakup over ten long years ago. If you aren’t familiar with the musical heritage of Akron, let me tell you about some bands you may have heard. Perhaps Devo rings a bell? Yeah? I thought so. How about The Waitresses? Maybe not? Maybe this song will refresh your memory.
Let’s take this conversation back to Ultrasphinx. They are picking up where Party of Helicopters left off. If this was 1988, I could easily see this band being part of the SST lineup. The music is melodic but also contains a sort of melancholy aggression. Parts of the songs remind me of Sunny Day Real Estate. This is a good thing! I am very much looking forward to hearing the full LP. Keep these guys on your radar.
